Global Asbestos Awareness Week

Global-Asbeswtos-Awareness-Week

Global Asbestos Awareness Week was introduced by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO) in 2005 and is held annually from April 1st to 7th. The aim is to increase the understanding of the dangers associated with asbestos exposure and preventative measures. This year many organisations, support groups, and medical professionals come forward to help educate people and the public.

History of Asbestos

While our understanding of the dangers of asbestos began as early as the 1920s, it wasn’t until the 1970s that regulatory measures began to take shape. Even more striking is the fact that asbestos was only partially banned in the UK in 1999, with a complete ban not coming into effect until 2006. This is why the presence of asbestos in buildings and infrastructure remains a significant concern for the foreseeable future. Given its extensive historical use and the enduring lifespan of structures containing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), the risk of exposure persists. Despite bans on asbestos use, countless buildings still harbour ACMs, posing a threat if these materials are disturbed or degrade over time. Its estimated 500,000 non-domestic premises in the UK, including schools, hospitals, offices, and industrial buildings contain asbestos.

Each year, 5,000 individuals succumb to the consequences of past asbestos exposure, with mesothelioma being a notable cause of mortality. Additionally, an estimated 2,500 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma annually, further highlighting the devastating impact of asbestos-related diseases on individuals and their families. Alarmingly, 85% of these cases are directly linked to the handling or exposure to asbestos, underlining the urgent need for comprehensive prevention and management measures. At the forefront of this danger is our tradespeople. Any house built or renovated before 2000 particularly buildings erected in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s post-war building boom is very likely to be filled with ACMs.

Dont take home Asbestos fibres
The issue with asbestos is the tiny fibres they can release when disturbed or handled. They are imperceptible, there are no clues to their presence in the air, and you can’t smell or see them. More worryingly these can easily sit on a person’s clothes and be taken home.

Legal Responsibilities

The responsibility of people who may encounter asbestos is not only to their health but also could include a legal duty if you are classified as a dutyholder. This may include; a building owner, landlord, facility manager, employer, maintenance contractor etc. The dutyholder is responsible for identifying and assessing the presence of asbestos, maintaining records, conducting risk assessments, developing and implementing an asbestos management plan, providing information to relevant parties, and ensuring compliance with regulations to protect individuals from the risks of asbestos exposure. Failing this may result in legal consequences and liability for damages should occupants, workers, or visitors in the building suffer harm due to asbestos exposure resulting from negligence in asbestos management.
